Hernia Development after Lower Bowel Resection

Tue, October 20, 2009 7:54 AM

good day everyone,

i’m desperate for any information on hernia development after a lower bowel resection surgery.

my mom recently had a lower bowel resection to remove about a foot of the ileum and a foot of the lower bowel due to scarring from crohn’s.  a couple of weeks after the wound closed, my mom began to notice an unusual bulge directly behind the site of the incision which turned out to be a hernia.

we then consulted two physicians about repairing the hernia.  the first doctor left us feeling discouraged (but not her fault).  the doc advised us of our options which included: 1) leaving the bulge as a permanent member of my mom’s body; 2) the alternative included the “the mesh technique” but came with a particular set of adverse consequences.  since she is currently a user of prednisone, the doctor said the prednisone will *** the healing and could possibly lead to a higher incident of infection.

the second doctor gave us a glimmer of hope.  he informed us he could repair the hernia using 2 procedures.  first, he could repair the hernia laparoscopically, still using “the mesh technique,” but avoiding having to reopen the wound. the second option also included repairing the hernia laproscopically, however he would use the “component separation technique.”

my question here is directed to those who developed hernias as a result of the surgery.  further, for those that developed hernias and had the surgery to repair the hernia,

1)      how did you decide on your technique?

2)      were you pleased with the results and was the gain (vanity, quality of life, etc.) worth the surgery?

3)      can anyone speak on “component separation technique”

4)      any open comments.

i sincerely thank everyone for their time and attention.
