Still pooping mucus after colectomy w/ileostomy

Sun, November 08, 2009 11:31 PM

Hi,

I'm one month out of the hospital after emergency colectomy for perforated colon on Sept. 18. Had to have another surgery to remove more of the infection in my gut so I was in the hosptial a long time. I've had that "have to poop" feeling come and go a few times and it wasn't bad after the surgery. My surgeon said it was normal. The last week, however, I've had that feeling but it's stronger and I have to run to the bathroom and then mucus stuff comes out. It hurts my butt, but then I feel relieved after and it goes away for a day or two.

My surgeon left my anus and part of my sigmoid colon in there so I can have a resection (j pouch) later when I recouperate. He said the part of the colon he left still has colitis but it should be inactive because it's not in use (all the digesting is happening in small intestine). Any one else have this feeling. Will it go away? Is it colitis acting up or just my butt letting me know it's still there and raring to get a j-pouch? I'm pretty worried, esp. after the nightmare I've been through with all this and can't imagine everything just being ok. Thanks for any info. you have.

It definitly is normal, and that feeling never goes away, i have had the bag almost 6 years now, i am 27 years old. I had the same surgery that you had, and then they made the J pouch, then 6 months after that, i never healed and i became more sicker then i was to begin with. they removed all my large, colon, and 1/4 of my small, so i am forever with the bag. I have adapted to this, but it is something that always bothers me. So to tell you that the feeling of the mucus will go away, it does not, you become used to it, and it becomes pain free. Thank you for reading my blog, really this is the first time that i have talked to someone about my illness, besides doctors and my mom.  Hope things work out for you.

It is normal to poop out mucus after the surgery I was freaking out when I was in the hospital when I went what I thought was poop but they told me it was just mucus that my small intestine was making and it would the entire time. I remember feeling a cramping sensation when I needed to empty the mucus. The nurse told me to just sit on the toilet and relax and let it all drain out. Then I felt better after going. So no worries it is normal.

You will always be "pooping" mucous.  Your body is used to getting rid of toxins that way and my doctor told me to get on the toilet in the morning and just push for awhile.  A few months after my surgery it was more crampy and often and sometimes I confused it with gas, forgetting I didn't have a colon anymore and ended up pushing in my sleep all over the bed.  Eventually you'll get control of it and you'll get used to it.  Unfortunately like everything else about this process it may take awhile.  Just be patient and don't be too worried about little things.  You may be more apt to hemorrhoids now.  I don't know if you're having a take-down of your ileostomy or not but your sphinctor will probably shrink before then so it's important to excrete your mucous.

I am pretty sure your colon and rectum will continue to make mucous.....forever.  You should check with your doctor but I think this is very normal.  Good luck, you should be on your way to feeling much better!
