Hallelujah for a tough ostomy!

Mon, December 14, 2009 1:00 AM

I had two surgeries this year, one in January to take out the colon and set up an ileostomy, then in March I had the takedown scheduled.  Something went wrong and I had an emergency surgery to reverse it, making three surgeries and a brand new  stoma.  The last stoma I had was perfect, used a normal bag, never had problems with it, it was even pretty tolerant of when I'd change a bag.  But the new stoma was a last minute thing so it was less than perfect.  I had leaks and blisters and sores and they got pretty painful, I thought I tried everything when suddenly I reconsidered using an ostomy belt.  And once I figured out how to wear it I stopped being sore around the stoma.  This is the first time I'e had a fresh bag and the belt on, hopefully it will prevent any soreness this time.  So, wear your ostomy belt! They actually have a purpose.
