My friends 18 year old daughter had her colon removed the week of Thanksgiving. She had some rectal bleeding a couple weeks ago and was given steroid suppositories to use for it. She has been having a hard time keeping her bag on and now her stoma is red, inflammed, weeping, and blistered and her bags just slide off. She also now has a rash going up to her chest. Her mom says it looks like the worst diaper rash ever. any suggestions??? I was hoping that this surgery would help her regain her life back and being a UC patient myself her post surgery issues are scaring me. Mostly I want to help her. I suggested something for yeast? Which is my guess with the damp area and the steroids. I would think if it was an allergy to the ostomy equipment she would have had problems before now. Thanks for any advice.

When I had my ostomy, I found I needed to try a few different types of bags before I found the right one -- different companies and different types. I also found I needed to change my bag every other day. Some folks said they could go 5 days but my skin couldn't handle it.
I also gave my skin a break by showering with my bag off. I took it off before I got in, took an extra long shower to give my skin and stoma some time to breath, the put on the new bag afterward (though it's was sometimes a tricky process if my stoma was active.
Not sure about the rash treatment as that didn't happen to me. Good luck.

Hello- There is a great forum on www.uoaa.org....the ostomy website that deals with skin issues. Does she have a ostomy nurse to connect with? Sometimes it can be a yeast issue and need nystatin prescribed. I hope she can connect with the dr/nurse to let someone look at it.
Good Luck....we've all been there and it does get better. :)
