Rawness around bag

Tue, January 26, 2010 1:42 PM

Has anyone had success using something that helps lessen the raw skin around the bag area. It burns my 9 yr old granddaughter and she also has itching. Also what are the best type of bags you are using. Hers seem to burst sometimes. Thank you for your help. She has 3 more weeks until her reversal.

Sorry to hear about the struggle for your young grand daughter with this horrible disease process.    I was much older, married, had kids, career, etc and it is still hard - can't imagine growing up and going through all life's events with these issues , but there are so many young people posting on this site - it is pretty prevalent.    Stay strong for her - she will need your support.

About your question - I had my first surgery Feb 5th - permanent illeostomy.  I am just getting used to the bags, changing, etc. and have a bit of breakdown already from a little leakage.    The hospital gave me an over the counter cream "Calmasine" to use.  It is a barrier, thick cream like zinc oxide, but also has some healing properties.  Also smells good, but a bit messy.    It has really seemed to help the red area - and of course I try to keep very clean and DRY in the area...

Good luck to you all.  Hope this helps

we were told to use the "stomahesive" protective powder on irritated skin. havent had to use it yet but maybe that will help. also to cleanse the skin with dove soap and make sure its very dry before applying the bag

hi! Have you tried skin prep wipes? They sting momentarily when you swipe them on raw skin, but generally i've found them to help. Also chaning bags more frequently and/or leaving them off during showers can help too. That way air can circulate around the skin.  This can be a little tricky if the stoma is active, but i've found that if I eat a handful of marshmellows and wait 20-30 minutes, things will slow down! Hope this is helpful! Best of luck to your granddaughter!
