Pain at scar sight

Thu, February 04, 2010 11:04 PM

I was just wondering if anyone that has had the take down surgery still has any pain at the stoma scar sight? My stomach hurts where the stoma used to be and the scar is now. It's only been three months I was just wondering if this pain goes away cause it is annoying. I notice that the more tense my stomach becomes the more it tends to hurt or bother me. I also noticed that I can not stand for prolonged periods of time without needing to sit because of the pain. It's just so annoying. Maybe it's just because it is still pretty new. I have a cousin that says hers still hurts and it's been a year so does it ever go away??????

Thanks,
Sammy

that is interesting I might have to look into that. I saw my surgeon again and told him about the pain it seems to get worse the more active I become or if I walk around or stand for long periods of time and it annoys the crap out of me. My surgeon double checked to make sure there was not a hernia so maybe it has something to do with a nerve.

Thanks to everyone who responded I appreciate it!!!

After one of my surgeries, I had very sharp pain just to the right of the scar, that was much worse if impacted (by my children, generally).  The end result was that a nerve had gotten damaged by the retractors during surgery and was causing the pain.  I had an anesthesiologist inject the site with anesthetic by ultrasound guidance and the pain resolved immediately, before I stood up from the table.  Might be something to think about for you.  This wasn't right under my scar, but off to the right.  My scar sometimes itches, but never hurts.

Sammy:

While I'm no doctor, my experience is in-line with what Breezy says.  My surgery was 20+ years ago and I still get 'funny' feelings around the stoma scar; I think the doctor is right about the mind treating it as an appendage that is no longer there.  In fact, for work I wear a security badge on a retractable lanyard that I clip to my belt loop near where the stoma scar is and whenever I have to pull the badge out to show it to a security guard I get a 'funny'/ticklish feeling on the scar; almost like I'm pulling my insides out.  I'm used to it now so it doesn't bother me, but it does make me wonder about the power of the mind . . . .

With that said, my 'funny' feelings have not included pain, so please keep in touch with your doctor about that to ensure it's not something else.

Kind Regards

Thanks for replying I did talk to my surgeon about the pain because the first thing I though of was that I had a hernia. But he said I was fine and not to worry but I see him again in three weeks. But it does feel like the stoma is there at times it's weird.

Sammy,

My surgeon said think of it like losing an appendage.  People who have a foot removed will have ghost feelings of their foot.  I get a burning pain at my scar and occassionally a pulling pain.  It has been 5 months for me.  Make sure you talk to the surgeon as well as your GI.  Pain that makes you sit down is worrisome.
