permanet surgery

Mon, March 01, 2010 2:50 PM

After having a temporary colostomy for almost 2 yrs., it has been decided that a permanet colostomy is needed in order for me to have my quality of life back.  I have crohns and uc.  Can anyone tell me what the surgery entails and how long is the recovery time.  Thanks.

Hi. I know exactly what you're going thru. I had a temp. colostomy done in 2002 to give my colon a rest, and I was supposed to have it reversed a year later. But my Crohn's got worse and the rest of it had to be removed. I was very stubborn and didn't wanna go thru w/ it but you're right, "quality of life" is what matters the most.  Recovery for me was longer b/c I had a ton of complications after the 2nd surgery. But, normally recovery time is around 6 wks.  You will be using different ostomy supplies.  Probably Durahesive skin barriers and drainable pouches will work best. Keep us posted. God bless!
