New J-pouch

I had an ileostomy for a year and when I went in before surgery and they did an always uncomfortable rectal exam my surgeon said they'd have to stretch out my sphinctor, since I obviously hadn't used in awhile.  Now that I'm finally using it again, my skin is really sensitive and it's always burning.  My mom recommended A & D ointment does anyone else know how to treat this or how long I should expect it to be a problem?

My surgeon actually gave me samples of an ointment called or cream called Calmoseptine It is the only thing that works for me and I have tried every other ointment I could think of. If you go to your pharmacy and ask them for it they will order it for you or they may have some in stock it costs only about 7 dollars totally worth it!! I hope this helps!!

I had my take down surgery in Oct 09 and also have major "butt burn."  There are lots of ideas for dealing with this on the discussion boards at j-pouch.org.  Many people use a special-order (but over the counter) paste called "Ilex."  I tried it, but I find that a mixture of Original Desitin (for diaper rash) mixed with stomahesive powder works the best for me.  Everyone is individual, so it's all trial and error.   Also, be sure to wash (use a squirt bottle) with lots of water after passing stool.  Dab dry with toilet paper (dont wipe.) Good luck!

hey2308, my understanding is that skin irritation is very common.  Your 'ouput' via the jpouch contains a lot of enzymes and other things that your colon would normally absorb back into your body.  Those things tend to be a bit rougher on the skin.  A&D ointment will certainly do the trick, but I find it a bit greasy and thus prone to leave a stain on the seat of your pants.    Personally, I prefer Desitin which I find to be much less greasy.  Try 'em both for awhile and see which works best for you.  You also might want to take a trip down the Baby Products isle at you grocery store; there might be something else out there that works even better.  Kind Regards.
