deciding on surgery

I've had colitis for 30 years.  I've been symtom free for the last 10 years, taking Asocol.  After my last routine colonoscopy, my new doctor said I have mild dysplasia and should have my colon out.  I'm in shock, since I'm symtom free and don't actually have cancer!  The second opinion (same office) said the same thing.  This seems kind of drastic to me.  Anybody have a similiar experience?

I guess you can tell I'm new at this! LOL... I recently had my annual colonoscopy and was told that they had found some dysplasia also.  It kinda worries me but my doctor said if it was still there next year we would talk about a resectioning.  I was thinking about a second opinion too!  I was also told by this same doctor last May that I had developed a liver problem (PSC)  they did a very invasive test on me in the hospital when they did this.  My colitis changed from direaha to constipation a few years ago.  Now I take laxitives a lot.  I don't know what to do either but I wanted you to know your not alone.

I haven't been put in your exact position, but I do have a question.....why was the second opinion within the same office??   Maybe seek yet another opinion (completely different) and see what their thoughts are.   I would definitely get comfortable w/it before heading into the OR.

Good luck!
