total colectomy and rectum

Mon, April 19, 2010 11:45 PM

My 15 year old son diagnosed in sep. 09 with IBD (not sure if crohns or UC), is now facing surgery.  After spending 3 weeks at children's hospital with a complication of pancreatiis and many test later,  it was finally determined that he has sever ulcerated colitis.  The doctors want to remove his entire colon and rectum.   This is so drastic.  But after trying every drug and medical treament to try and get this under control, we were left with no other option.  I am concern about the complications of surgery and the fact that he has had acute pancreattis.  What can we expect after surgery and recovery?

Thanks

We were in the same boat ~2 yrs ago only difference being my son was 16 going on 17.  Meds (Remicade/Prednisone) worked for a couple of months til he picked up an infection.   They were able to save his rectum but the rest of the colon had to go.  We had no choice as he was quite sick at the time.  Yes, there was a transition period  but surgery also gave him his life back.  He went through quite a lot .....has war wounds to prove it....but has the become quite the young man that makes this parent very proud.
