Is there anyone out there happy with an ostomy bag? What can you eat? What could you eat right after surgery? Did you have to eat just pureed food? How long did it take before you could eat more? Did you get very hungry?
I am scheduled to have much of colon and a little of ileum removed. I don't know if I will need a bag or not.

Hello, I just had step one of three on July 28th, wondering how you are doing with the ileosotmy? Its been hard to adjust to the first week and am hoping it gets better from here.

Hi Ebko,
Just a quick note to say that I have had my ileostomy since 1994. I can't quite remember what I was able to eat right after the surgery, but I do know that I kept it to very soft foods. Not pureed foods. It took awhile to get used to having a bag on my side, but now it is like second nature. I am able to eat any thing that I want. From soup to nuts! You learn as time goes on what bothers you and what does not... The most important thing I wish to convey to you is that you MUST stay hydrated. This was the biggest thing. Because you will be diverted you can get dehydrated much quicker than those without a bag. My drink of choice is water. I can not even think of drinking gatoraide anymore. I can not even look at the bottles...lol I did not know that keeping hydrated was that important till I almost died from this. So what ever you take in now, remember to double it at least. Personally this bag saved my life. I have my moments when I sure wish I did not have it but truth be told... it is sure nice not having to know where each and every bathroom is everytime you leave your home. If you have other questions I would be glad to answer them. I could go on and on here with all the pros and cons... but I am not quite sure what all you want to know...
Good luck with your sugery and if you have other questions... please ask!

hi,
I am in the beginning stages of my j-pouch surgery. I had step 1 (of 3) completed at the beginning of June and have had my ileostomy bag for 5 weeks now. The first 2.5 days after surgery (keep in mind that I was very sick prior to surgery) I didn't eat anything but ice chips, hard candy, and popsicles. I was then allowed a liquid diet for another day and a half and then a soft diet for 2 weeks (anything you can cut with a fork). During the soft diet I was eating pasta, burgers, cooked veggies, fish, pretty much anything but raw fruits/veggies, heavy meats, hard breads, and spicy foods. Now I am eating everything, no restrictions but am learning as I go what is and isn't good for me. This is much better than the BRAT diet I was eating when I was in an active flare.
