Hey there,

Well it is kind of ironic to find this post since hey I am just recovering from my take down surgery. As you stated everyone’s recovery is different but so far mine has been great. I have only been out of the hospital for 5 days. I did not need any pain meds ever sense I’ve been home. As for the urgency I was really worried about that too. So far it is not as bad as most people had told me. They say to expect to go to the bathroom about 8 to 10 times a day but it seems I go about 4 or 5 times. It is really nice because I have complete control. We had company tonight unexpectedly after I just ate dinner and I held it for 4 hours before I had to go to the bathroom. It was a great feeling! To be fair I am also taking Imodium and Fiber so that helps bulk things up. I actually am probably going to stop with the fiber since it is too over baring. I think you should be fine as long as you have a good surgeon. They should do some kind of pouch test before you have your surgery. I forget what it is called but mine was an enema x-ray type deal.

I would like to add some more points here....

regarding the control they usually do one test to chk ur rectal muscles and they ask u to do the normal sphincter exercises, which they already might have asked u ...
My History
2006  diagnosed UC & underwent removal of colon within 3 months
2008 Nov--J-pouch
2009 Jan-Failure of closure due to obstruction
2009 Feb-Rebuild of Stoma
2011-Planned closure again

In 2009 i went for a closure but it failed due to an intestine obstruction .
The time gap which i had between the j-pouch and closure was around 70 days.
So plan it well take ur time
and yes Every surgery is not the same & i pray that it goes great for u.

Thanks
Aamer

Hi ,

Still waiting for closure to be done...planned in 2011 .
On the basis of my inquires and what i know
After the surgery for around 1-3 months the trips to restroom will be around 8-10 ,after that it gradually decreases to 6-8 in 6 months.
I met one person 6 months after his surgery & he was having only 4-5 trips.
however he followed a low diet.
Fingers crossed

Thanks
Aamer
