I'm responding to Rick, who asked about fistula after surgery, coming through the incision. I'm interested in your experience, because I had major abdominal resection surgery on Jan, 5, and a week or so later, got the same thing. My treatment is TPN, nothing to eat or drink for 4-6 weeks, to allow healing. How long did you wait for the repair surgery? How did that go? what did it entail? Thanks! Joeff

Well, the ileostomy means that I "poop" a little differently, but all in all my quality of life is amazing! The surgery was a big step, but after trying every medication, I figured it was my next best bet for relief. No regrets from having it done. It took some getting used to, but once I recovered from the surgery and started gaining weight and feeling better, I realized that it was the best choice for me.

Since you have a bag now, do you live a normal life or do you have some issues? Cause I might have to go back in for another surgery and this time a bag is involved.

Keep your chin up! I had a chain of 3 recurring fistula on the back of my thigh even after ileostomy surgery. Once my Crohn's calmed down and my body healed a bit from the surgery, it was better able to fix the fistulas. Mind you, it took one more minor surgery to entirely fix the fistula, but they've been gone for 4 years now and show no sign of returning. Sometimes these things just have to be taken in stages...I know it stinks, but hang in there!
