I had a part of small and large intestines removed on 4-8-08 due to crohns. And for the past 2 dAYS i am feeling like my old symtoms are coming back. When i had my checkup at the surgeons office he told me that it is just part of recovery. Has anyone had crohns and had a resection? R the pains and the spasms normal? As it is now 1:03 am and i am still up because my "stomach" will not stop cramping. Any advise?

Hi Jackie...I've suffered from Crohn's for over 25 yrs. and 2 yrs. ago had ileostomy surgery. Name a drug & I was probably on it. Surgeries? Resection in '91, sub-total colectomy in '93, rectal abcess drainage in '00, gallbladder removal in '03 (which left me bowel incontinent), ileostomy in '06 & currently have a catheter draining fluid from underneath my stoma (piece of small intestine pulled through the abdominal wall in order to allow waste to empty into a pouch). I've omitted other, unrelated surgeries. Following my original resection, I was so greatful that the excrutiating daily abdominal pain had disappeared. Unfortunately, the Crohn's returned almost immediately. You certainly can expect to have symptoms, as you describe, while your body recovers (this may take several months...I would start to feel better & then suddenly feel like I was relapsing). However, if you do not start to feel some improvement after a few mos. or the symptoms seem to be worsening, I would suggest that you have a thorough evaluation by your gastroenterologist or surgeon. Normally, a follow-up colonoscopy and/or scans are done to see if imflammation/complications are present. Unfortunately, there's no cure yet, however, there's much more research being done today and better drug treatments. You know your body...if things don't seem right, speak up! I was eventually able to find a great gastro who worked WITH me. In addition to learning all that I could about the disease (through books as I didn't have the luxury of the internet back then), realizing that I could 'shop' for the best doctor, for me & be listened to, made such a difference. In fact, I recently 'discharged' my previous surgeon due to her often cold demeanor...not easy to do but I'm so relieved. Wishing you well...fuzzy

Hey Jackie-

While my surgery was for UC and not Crohn's, (IPAA) I'd have to say that post gut surgery pains are par for the course. I'd not worry too much about new flares just yet. Adhesions will give you some pain for some time.

Jackie,

I will hnave my husband reply to you when he gets up, but, yes, the pains are unfortuntely part of the healing process.  He has had 2 resections and it literally took months before he was better.  Think of all the trauma that occured during those surgeries.  Your body is just trying to repair itself AND keep in mind that adhesions can develop post surgery that can cause pain.  Nice huh?  Take care of one problem for another.  Again, I will have him reply later, as he is the best one to talk to.  Take care and rest, if you can.
