Anyone have kids with UC and Type 1 Diabetes? Looking for advice....

Wed, April 17, 2013 9:27 PM

My friend has a 7 year old daughter who was recently diagnosed with UC. She currently has Type 1 Diabetes. The diabetes is really complicating her treatment options. Taking steroids to calm the UC creates problems with her blood sugar levels. Anyone have kids or know of an adult who suffers from both? I have Crohn's disease and have been trying to offer some support for her family but I am limited in my knowledge about UC. Even her doctors have said it is rare to have both these diseases. I would love to be able to give her some positive advice.

Thanks,
NWMom

I have a 13 year old daughter with Type 1 and Crohn's disease. It is quite a challenge trying to figure out what the best course of treatment will be, and there are a lot of crossover questions that no one has the answer to, such as is the Crohn's bothering her stomach or is it the diabetes?   Is it both?  We are managing right now without the use of steroids, which is so hard on Type 1 patients, but it is hard emotionally in learning to live with both diseases.  Neither one is a particularly easy disease.  My daughter and I have created a page on Facebook called Living with both Type 1 and Crohn's Disease if you want to send your friend to.  We are trying to connect with other families and have not had any luck.  Best, Erin

I'm going though same situation with my daughter, however she was first diagnosed with UC and then got the type 1 diabetes diagnoses. Her doctors have cometo the conclusion that in order for her to increase her BMI she needed to eat and since these diets are totally different it's a little hard. Her GI recommend me a endocrinologist who he can work to control both. Her endo decided that the UC is currently more important to deal with and insulin can correct the sugar. The 1st time she took prednisone her sugar went up to 490 and insulin didn't even drop it. She is currently on lantus 2x a day and Humalog on a sliding scale. I know it is difficult I'm having a hard time adjusting but speak to your endo in regards to increasing her insulin doses
