I have been living with Ulcerative Colitis for 17 years of my life, and I have been using cannabis for the latter 10 years. I started to use it recreationally, and noticed how it "soothed" my ulcerative colitis symptoms. I live in California, the first medical marijuana state, and I hold a recommendation from my doctor to use cannabis for my UC. The awesome thing about cannabis, is that it does not have to be smoked. Tinctures, capsules, edibles, and cannabis oil, which can be smoked, vaporized, ingested, or used topically, are alternative ways of medicating with cannabis with out the need of combusting plant matter.
Cannabis has worked wonders for my UC. It is safe (perhaps the safest drug known to man) and natural (use organically grown cannabis.) It eases the abdominal cramping and decreases the amount of visits to the bathroom during a flare up. I am currently prescribed 1.2 grams of Asacol a day from my gastro (luckily my UC is under control, which I have cannabis to thank for, and It's been a 7 years since I've been prescribed steroids or synthetic immuno-modulators (cannabis does this as well.)) I've also notice that I can go months at a time with only medicating with cannabis with out the need of Asacol, or other pharmaceutical drugs for UC, but this is something to consult with your doctor before doing. Humans have a numerous amount of CB2 receptors in our gut, which leads me to believe that cannabinoids link to these receptors, which eases UC flare-ups, and helps keep it "dormant."
If you live in a medical or recreational cannabis state and are tired of taking tons of Asacol and/or are weary of steroids and immuno-modulators, give cannabis a try. I recommend cannabis products that are full indica or indica dominant, or rich in CBD. Do the research and try it out yourself.
