I'm glad to have found this forum! I'm feeling overwhelmed and worried about my daughter. This past December (2013) my 15 year old daughter started having gas pains and cramps. She's always had a "nervous" stomach and a long history of constipation. The very first day of her winter break she saw blood in her stool and began having diarrhea. We immediately took her into urgent care. That doctor was sure it was a food allergy and had her cut out gluten and dairy and meanwhile took stool cultures. The cultures were negative and our family doctor said this was not allergies and got us in quickly to see a pediatric GI doctor.
She had a colonoscopy and upper GI (by this time she had been having bloody diarrhea and was down 30 pounds). Once her diagnosis was made he started her on Pentasa. It started working within a few days and ended up at 3 grams a day. Also started on iron, prilosec and we started her on probiotics.Within another week or so she was able to go back to school, play on her school tennis team and back to normal.
In July she went back for another colonoscopy which confirmed mild active colitis. The doctor switched her to Lialda 1.2 two tablets a day so she didn't have to take so many of the Pentasa pills.
She has been training for school soccer this summer and the nerves and anxiety she has always gotten has triggered occasional diarrhea now. Within the last few days she's started having blood and mucous in her stool again and I'm worried this is the beginning of another flare. I'm now waiting to hear back from the nurse.
My question is for others with more knowledge: does this mean that Lialda doesn't work for her? Is it common to have a flare and treat it, and then go back to Lialda or does this mean they would put her on another drug? I hate to think she's already resistant to something.
