Periodic eipsodes of severe nausea, weakness, UC related?

Sat, December 20, 2014 3:30 PM

My 16 year old daughter was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis last spring and is now in remission and on a maintenance dose of Asacol. Every so often (no predictable pattern of recurrence), she has 3 to 4 days of severe nausea, loss of appetite, extreme weakness, and vertigo/light-headedness upon standing. She always has diarrhea when she is having one of these. She sometimes also has headache, vomiting, and low grade fever. Anti-nausea meds (Ondansetron, Promethazine) sometimes help with the nausea but don't affect the course or duration of the episodes.

They don't seem to be hormone related or consistently associated with headaches (we were thinking migraines). Anyone have any ideas regarding whether these are UC related and/or what else could be causing them? Also, any additional treatment options are welcomed. At this point it seems we can only wait for them to pass, while she misses 2-4 days of her life being in bed and feeling awful!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
