Child on Imuran?

Tue, April 14, 2015 1:24 PM

We are seriously considering putting our 5 year old son on Imuran to treat his Crohn's.  Does anyone have experience/success with a young child on this medication?  I'm aware of the possible side effects.  Thank you.  Jill

My son is 10 and has been on Imuran since he was 5. He did have one 20 month remission, which was great, but other than that his remissions are usually about 6-7 months and then he needs prednisone again.

Hi Shawna.  Thanks again for sharing your experience w/ your son on Imuran.  I hope his flare ends soon!  Your information has been helpful.  Best, Jill

Hi Jill,

We've tried the milder meds too and diet, etc. too.  Its actually really hard to determine how long at a time period that he has been in remission with Imuran.  As he's gotten older we think that stress/anxiety/nervousness, etc. also plays a role in his flares which includes being anxious/nervous about holidays, school, bdays, events/parties.  So for this reason lately he seems to be doing good for about 4-5 months and then flare up for a month or two and then back into remission, etc.  Just a continuous cycle.  The reason I mention this is that its not a consistent basis that he's in remission.  But the longest time I would have to say would be about 7 months that he was doing really well and not having any flares.  Not sure if this helps or not.  If you have any other questions, feel free to question.

Best wishes for your son.

Hi Shawna.  Thank you for your response.  We have put off placing our son on an immunomodulator for some time hoping that other milder things (diet, antibiotics, aminosalicylates) could keep him in remission.  His GI doctor does not feel that 4 month remission periods and then a flare is successful enough.  May I ask what the longest duration of time your son has been in remission since being on Imuran?  Has it been consistent?  Any side effects?  Thank you so much.  Jill

Hi Jill,

My son is 11 and has been on Imuran since 2007 (diagnosed with U.C. @ 1 1/2 years old); so he was about 3 years old when we put him on this medication.  These medications are very scary and we spoke to 2 GI specialists before we agreed to put him on this medication.  He has had many long periods of remission since being on Imuran.  However, he is currently in a flare and will probably be put back on steriods again.  I worry about the potential problems of young children being on all these meds long term since there is no scientific studies to give us any answers.

If you decide to put your son on Imuran, I hope that it brings him relief from his U.C. symptoms.
