Psychiatric problems and Crohn's

Wed, March 18, 2009 12:00 AM

Hi- My daugher is 19 years old and has been having alot of behavioral issues with anger, depression, anxiety, thinking she is going crazy.  I just went to a therapist to discuss her symptoms and the behavior issues she is experiencing.  His preliminary dx is bordline personality disorder.  I am not sure this is correct but it has made think about her tx over the past 6 years and how her personallity changed once she began tx.  I am very upset that she may have these problems due to the medications given to her for tx for Crohn's.   I have been searching the internet and have found that there are patients that have severe pyschiatric problems due to meds.

f I were you, I would get another opinion about your daughter's psychiatric diagnosis. Borderline personality disorder is, for the most part, an untreatable diagnosis, pride counseling review will be able to help you.

If I were you, I would get another opinion about your daughter's psychiatric diagnosis. Borderline personality disorder is, for the most part, an untreatable diagnosis, and I'm wondering if the psychiatrist is knowledgeable about what a teen with Crohn's or colitis is experiencing. I do not want to undermine the help you've sought already. It's just that as a child therapist with a son with Crohn's, I've noticed that people can get this stuff wrong, and there are so many who are ignorant to the issues these kids face at every turn. Please take this with the good intentions that it was meant to relay. Good luck to you.

I don't think the Crohns meds are linked, but (rhetorical question) how can someone with Crohns NOT have psychological issues?  Especially at a young age?  Not only does she face all the "usual" stresses of growing up and finding her identity, but now she has to do it with a chronic disease with embarassing symptoms and medications that sometimes don't work so well.  Counseling, counseling, counseling.
