Pain

Sat, March 21, 2009 11:18 PM

My daughter has been diagonised with Crohn's disease, she is 15 years old.  She had taken Pentasa, Endecort, and 3 Remicade treatments.  The Doctor tells us through her lab tests that her Crohn's is mild, however she complains of constant stomach pain.  Has anyone else had this experience? And if so, what have you found to help relieve the pain, I am upset and sick seeing my daughter having to deal with these issues.  Please reply, I need to help her and I feel helpless.  Upset Dad

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. I have crohns too, over 20+ years. My 9 year old son was just diagnosed last week. The shock and devastation has brought me to this website, one I have not visited  for myself ever. The kids are so young to be dealing with this...and knowing the pain and discomfort first hand sometimes makes it worse. I can tell you from a personal stand point and a stand I will take with my son is taking out all the imflamitory foods that they eat. It is the single most difficult thing to do, and i fall off the wagon often, and get back on over and over again. some believe that crohns is a reaction to the gluten, and the imbalance of bacteria that causes the imflamation. try taking out the gluten, when she is really hurting, try just liquids. I told my son, its kinda like a swollen ankle, you have to rest it so the swelling can come down, and heal...and every time you choose something to eat, it should be the right choice. I also believe, for me, keeping my stress level down is imparitive to my well being, and its not different, but harder for kids. yoga, meditation...prayers? My prayers are with all those poor kids.

My 9 year old daugther has Crohn's and has experienced similar pain.  I agree with the other post that it may take awhile before the medications take effect.  You may also want to think about what your daughter is eating that could be causing her discomfort.  When my daughter was first diagnosed I kept a food journal and noted what gave her problems.  When she eats popcorn she complains of pain, red meat, and greasy foods also give her problems.  Try monitoring her diet.  I hope this helps!

Upset Dad - Most of us who have Crohn's have experienced this kind of pain at one time or another; usually the greatest at the time when we were first diagnosed or are in the middle of a flare up.  I suspect that the pain you are referring to is in the lower right quadrant of your daughter's torso.  Until the drugs begin to knock down the inflammation (which may take several weeks and some experimenting with dosages), she is probably going to have to deal with the discomfort.  The knowledge that her case is a mild one, though, should give both of you hope that management of the disease will be easier on her than on many others.  I have found that a heating pad placed on the painful area brings some temporary relief.  I have also found that not having restrictive clothing across the area also helps.  Stretching out in a lounge chair instead of being cramped up in a ball helps, along with the heating pad.  (No sleeping at any time with the heating pad, though!)  Sometimes a good soak in a hot bath can be effective.  None of this will provide permanent pain relief, but may help provide your daughter with at least a little temporary relief.  As a parent (my kids are grown now) and one who managed Crohn's for 45 years, I sympathize with your daughter's discomfort and the helplessness you are feeling that sometimes comes with parenthood!  - Bob
