Okay ... I don't know where to post so I will put this in a couple of different areas. I just turned 34 three months and was diagnosed December 2008 with UC. I am a newlywed and neither of us have kids and we want to have a family. I have done some research and it looks like less than 10% chance of the disease being passed onto a child. Can anyone give me feedback on this topic. Who has UC? Do your kids have it? Do your kids have UC and you don't. Whatever anyone can tell me would be great. Thanks!!

Good luck!!! My daughters IBD specialist says it is very common in UC patients to have "bacteria overgrowth" which the probiotic helps. He is pretty certain she has bacteria overgrowth. He wanted her to take a "Lactulose Hydrogen Breath Test" to confirm it but she wouldn't stop the probiotic for 2 weeks since she's feeling too good.

Thanks for all the information. First ... I go to a GI doctor and I am afraid to change because she has been with me through all of the issues because I have alot of other things going on with the UC. It sounds like there is no rhyme or reason as to why someone gets UC just like there is no rhyme or reason as to what foods trigger the dang flares. This truly is a crazy disease. It is so NOT black and white.

Are you seeing an IBD specialist or a general GI doc for your UC? The doc would probably help you in that area. I've been told IBD tends to run in families but it doesn't mean your children will get it. My brother had UC, I don't have UC but my daughter does but my son doesn't. One of my daughter's docs said he expects a cure for this in 10 years. They are so close so in the future there should be better meds or maybe even no UC at all. My brother didn't even have the meds they have now. He just drank some powder stuff and it didn't help at all. My daughter is doing great. I don't know if they even had probiotics back then either. My mom thinks my brother got UC years ago after he took the series of Hep B vaccines. I think my daughter got it after she stopped her acne meds she was taking for almost 3 years. My son took the same meds and didn't get it. Her new doc explained it like this: 100 people could get sick on a cruise ship and only 1 will get UC. He said most of those people on the ship's immune system helps them get well but the one person's immune system doesn't shut off and once this happens the UC occurs. There's always some trigger to it. I hope this helps. Good luck!!!
