I'm writing for diet suggestions for my 28 yr. old son. His UC is horrible right now. His MD has never given him a diet to follow. He eats healthy (chicken, brocoli, granola and whole grains). Recently heard all of these are culprits !! Is this true? What about a gluten free diet also. Desperate to get him help. Just found him a holistic doctor in his town. He's such an active guy (runner, cyclist), but can't do any of these right now.

Oops - I was typing a response and closed my message before sending. Here are my two cents about diet. My husband was diagnosed with UC in 2003 and has had three flare-ups in the past six years. His MD, who is wonderful and treats this disease very aggressively, doesn't put much stock in the diet-UC connection and that is where I disagree with him. A poor diet didn't cause UC but a good diet can control the symptoms and flare-ups. There is a book called Eating Right For a Bad Gut that is sort of a bible for UC/IBD sufferers. My husband thinks all this diet stuff is nonsense, but he will eat whatever I put in front of him and it is at that point that I feel I can help him. He's on Lialda and Rowasa and a strong probiotic from Whole Foods - Dr. Uhhira's (?). Additionally he dropped trigger foods that irritate his system - corn, chocolate, nuts, seeds, anything fried or processed, most spices. Yes, and broccoli was dropped too. High-fiber foods did more harm than good because they are irritating to the colon and some food flat out cause inflammation in the gut. Our family switched our diet to whole foods, whole fats, dairy from whole milk, lots of veggies, grains that have been soaked before cooking, no sodas, very little liquor. You can visit the Westin Price Foundation which advocates basically the same thing. I hope this helps. Eating Right for a Bad Gut really helped me take a new view on diet and foods. Good luck. I have a friend who has suffered with Crohn's for 20 years and was on Remicade for many years, and she says that diet control is the ONLY thing that helps her. So it can be very helpful, no matter what the MD's say.
My son has Crohn's and is currently in jail. T....
