My son, age 13, was diagnosed last year with Crohn's. He has done well on Imuran and Prevacid, but has severe anemia. Unfortunately, he is unable to swallow pills, so we were purchasing a liquid iron (Niferex Elixir) which he was able to tolerate. However, it is $90 per bottle, considered over-the-counter, and we got to where we could not afford it every 3 weeks. He has since tried another liquid iron, which our insurance would cover, but he felt sick after taking just a small dose. Does anyone know of a liquid iron that is tolerable to the stomach (which our insurance might cover)? Can anyone come up with any other ideas for a child who cannot take pills but needs to take iron? I am ready to do battle with my insurance company to get them to pay for the Niferex, but feel it will be useless.

My 14 year old learned how to take pills by putting them in applesauce on a spoon. Good Luck!!
