My son (Seth) was diagnosed at the age of 4 with UC. It all started with a sinus infection that the pediatrician treated with antibiotics. When the infection was not clear after first round, he put him on another, and another ect... Seth became very ill, lathargic, vommiting, diareah and was admitted to the hospital. Soon after, we had a diagnosis of C-diff, due to antibiotics. Seth was treated with many different meds. and after a week, we were sent home. He was doing fine untill we stoped the meds. and with in hours, he was sick again. This routine went on for 6 weeks. We stayed a week at a time in the hosp. every other week. Our pediatrician would not call a specialist to check Seth out. After the third time of watching my baby get deathly sick, I contacted a pediatric GI doctor who set us up for colonoscopy and endoscopy. Results came back that Seth had thousands of ulcers starting from his rectom up into his colon. We were told this is a result of the c-diff. It took us 7 mths. to finally get rid of the c-diff.
I have been told by many doctors that if he ever takes antibiotics again, he will get c-diff again, and his UC will ultimately flare up.
Now I am finding myself having to make the dicision whether or not to give him antibiotics to get him well from a cold and sinus infection that he has had for months!!! We have tried all the home remidies that I know of and over the counter meds. (which I have been told by the GI to take him off of). As a parent, it is hard to watch your children so sick. Much less to give them something that you know is going to. Please let me know if anyone has delt with this and is there another answer other than antibiotic?

Hello -
My son had a similar reaction to antibiotics - always causing a flare after taking it. We found that if we catch the sinus infection early we can use the 3 day pack of Zithromax & Cultrell at the same time - Davis does well.
Sorry - I don't know an alternative to antibotics. I wish you luck finding one.
