Why don't doctor's back it up?
And how do you get a very young child to only eat the "basic diet" from Breaking the Vicious Cycle: homemade cottage cheese, eggs, chicken soup with carrots, etc. My son is only 20 months and I'm worried that if I put him on this diet he will not get the calories he needs to grow properly. Of course I would only put him on it if his doctor gave me permission.

Our gastroenterologist hadn't heard of the SCD, but she said it was fine to try it. Frankly I was going to try it regardless of whether or not I had her backing because I have been dealing with wrong diagnoses and doctors telling me I was "worrying about nothing" for four years when in fact my daughter has ulcerative colitis. So while I respect doctors, I have learned they don't have all the answers and the harsh medications my daughter takes for juvenile arthritis and uveitis apparently aren't helping the ulcerative colitis and therefore are the wrong medications for her.
Anyway, we have had fantastic results with the SCD in the first four weeks of following it. My five year old daughter was very receptive to trying the diet because she hopes it will help her heal so she can get off the weekly injections she gets now. She's always been a good eater - loves fruit and vegetables and usually will try new foods - but I have found she LOVES every new food item I introduce.... most likely because she's craving the variety. Even with fish - which she used to "hate" - she now says it's good.
The trick is planning ahead. I feel like I'm always in the kitchen these days, but with the results she's getting, it's worth it!
I think everyone should try this or another similar diet just to rule out a food link. If you don't see results in a month, then go back to your regular diet.
