my son is almost 14 and has uc since october. today was the 1st time he missed the bathroom, unfortunately, in the changing area of a pool. needless to say how awfull he felt. i tried to explain him that it's not his fault, and to encourage him for what he is - a great person which has a lot ahead of him to accomplish and fulfill. however, i would appreciate it if anyone can share any practical ways to deal with those kind of incidences.what worries me a lot, is the accessability at the highschool - if he'll have enough time to reach it.
thanks and may all be healthy,

I'm sorry to hear that he had to endure that, I always worry my daughter will have something like that happen. I'm sure he is very distraught about it. I would suggest the undergarment like a Depend to him. He will probably want nothing to do with it, but at least he will know there are options. He may change his mind someday. Also, the websites suggestion of keeping a change of underwear and pants is a great idea for such an occasion.

Ugh, my heart aches for these kids. I agree with your previous post, humor goes a long way. Make light of the situation and move on. It is so difficult, especially these days, kids are soooo cruel.
As for high school, I would talk with the principal, making sure all teachers are aware of his situation. They can seat him closest to the door, giving him a quicker exit. Another thing he can get is the faculty room priviledges ( in the event that is closer than the next student rest room).
Praying for a cure,

Thank you for your advice. You are so right, humor is a great asset for everyone, nontheless for challenging circumstances. It's not easy to do, but I try to teach myself and my son, to turn a disadvantage to an advantage.
I wish us all good health,

Your poor son. I sometimes think fear of accidents is worse than the disease itself. From personal experience, some protective underwear would probably help his confidence and make sure he always has a small bag with spare clothes and wipes so he can deal with the problem himself with as little attention as posssible.
Humour helps too. If you can persuade him there is a side that will make people laugh. Everyone (except probably IBD sufferers!) loves a joke about running to the bathroom.
Start reading about low carb diets. Life Without Bread and Breaking the Vicious Cycle have improved my health beyond recognition over the last four years and my uc has improved hugely and is still getting better all the time when I look back. Would he read the low carb websites for himself?
Warm wishes
