lab values

SO I am confused about my sons iron levels. He is on the maximum dosage for his age (5 1/2 yo) and yet his iron level continues to remain low (29). His hemoglobin is in the normal range so I'm told he really isnt anemic but my son does not like taking the iron supplement bc if can make him vomit from time to time.

(His CRP level is pretty high too...19)

My question is how much do other parents worry about lab results? Just wondering if I am worrying too much.

I agree with AZ mom.....definitely a mom thing.   In the beginning stages of this glorious venture (NOT), I used to scrutinize over the labs like there was no tomorrow.   It came to a point where our doctor asked me if  I was studying for a career in medicine.  I really became quite knowledgeable, but it was all soo new and I was uneducated.

Fast forward six years and I now am somewhat more relaxed and don't get too alarmed at the ordinary "small changes".   I am able to gauge how my daughter is behaving daily and can usually tell if there may be something brewing....by her behavior, activity level, appetite, etc.

If the your little one's vitamin supplement isn't agreeing with him, trying a different brand may help.   Talk with your pharmacist, maybe they can mix a compound and mask the task with flavoring?   I'm not sure if they can for iron, but my daughter is on folic and they mix it and flavor it cherry (she doesn't mind that).

Well wishes,

You know what?  We have all been there.  I have lived and died by the lab reports.  I think they are definitely an important part of the picture but look at them over time, think about how your child is feeling when they are at different levels, talk with your child's doctor about your concerns over the labs.  They are part of the picture but definitely not all.

That being said.  We are due labs right now and like you, I will pour over the results.  It's a Mom thing.
