Hi. I am Christopher's Mom...Christopher is 5 and a newly dx Crohn's patient. Christopher is on a high dose of steroids and has a ravishing appetite. We are trying to make his snacks as healthy as possible. At this point, his doctor said he is doing phenominal and can eat mostly anything.
I know that different foods will affect each child differently. However, we are able to send in 2 snack a day for Christopher (very similar to preschool.) I have ordered some books, but most snacks focus on smoothies which are impractical or more adult food.
I have found a lot of muffin recipes and I have started using some of them. However, I was just wondering if you all had any suggestions of items I can send.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Andrea,
Thank you so much for those links! My son was just diagnosed and I had heard about the 504 but wasn't sure what to ask for or where to start. This is great.

Hi there,
We don't do SCD but my daughter (11) is on Pred too and eating
everything in sight. In addition to some of the things already
mentioned we've done cut up watermelon, graham crackers, Kashi bars (she
likes the pumpkin spice ones best).
Also, I wanted to add that it's ok to request that the school allow your son to have free access to water and snacks. Because he has a medical diagnosis, he is entitled to a "504" plan that lists any accommodations that he might need. I'm in the process of setting that up for my daughter (permission to quickly excuse herself to the bathroom, access to a private bathroom if she needs it, a plan for how to maintain communication with her teachers about school work if she is absent, etc) but have some things in place already. One is that she is allowed to carry a satchel around with her that holds a snack and water bottle. I don't know if your son would benefit from this or not but I figured that I'd mention it.
If you are interested in more information about 504 plans, you can check out these two links on the CCFA website:
http://www.ccfa.org/media/pdf/edequity.pdf (info)
http://www.ccfa.org/media/pdf/504%20PLAN%20letterhead.doc (Sample/blank 504 plan. A plan is typically done in partnership with the school and ours is turning out to be much more streamlined but this at least gives you a place to start.)
Good luck!

Hi , My son too is with steroids right now and has chrons. Great snacks for school are Funky Monkey dried fruit and Stretch Island fruit leathers all natural no preservatives and are SCD safe. You can find these at Whole Foods. Also check them online, they are cheaper if you buy them by the box...

No berries, fruits with skin, or seeds. I recommend seedless raisins to increase potassium, regular saltine crackers with peanut butter or fluff, try some Go-gurt which doesn't need to be refrigerated if I remember correctly. Once a week you can try a sweet thing like jello or a snack pack pudding cup.
I hope this helps you out-this link worked like a charm for me, great advice!

From each and every suggestion, I have gathered great ideas! Christopher loves yogurt but I was afraid it would get too warm, so the freezing is a great idea...and the certain name brands to look for at the store.
Thank you all for taking the time to share! Your advise to me at this time in my life is valued more than you know...

I have lots of suggestions. Let's face it, we want something that is quick, easy to pack and won't stick out like a sore thumb. As you know, keeping Lizzie as "normal" as possible without ostricizing her from others has always been my #1 goal. So, here are a few things that we keep on hand: pretzels, yogurt (I freeze then by snack time, it is a nice cool treat), applesauce cups (all natural, unsweetened), fruit bowls, Pirate Booty (great alternative to the horrible for the gut popcorn). It is low in residue, easier to digest, yet still gives you the crunch....even comes in individual snack bags. The same company also makes Smart Puffs, their alternative to cheese puffs. I also give Honey Sunshine cereal by Kashi (it is all organic and has been agreeable). Sun Chips is something we recently added. To be honest, I wasn't too sure, but she had them while she was at Camp Oasis and loved it. I do all types of muffins too, I even sprung for a mini-muffin tin.....she loves them.
Keep in mind everything isn't going to agree w/every "special belly", so be slow in introducing. Good luck and happy snacking!

Hi Christopher's Mom - I don't mean to reply to every one of your posts but I can so relate since the first 3 months of 1st grade, Claire was on prednisone. We followed low fiber/low residue diet with Claire and you may be doing something different but......I used to peel apples and slice them, cantaloupe chunks, applesauce, goldfish crackers, bananas, pudding and oh yes, the muffins. :-)
My son has Crohn's and is currently in jail. T....
