Dr. wants to switch my 11 yo son to Methotrexate as he has labs are still showing a lot of inflamation and anemia even after 9 mos on Imuran and starting dose at 50mg and now at 150mg. Does anyone have experience with Methotrexate? I can not seem to find to many things on it. Worried about all the side effects.

My 17 year old son has been on Methatrexate since August. I give it to him in injectible form once a week, usually Sunday mornings. He does feel fairly crummy on Sundays but is able to do things but usually takes it relatively easy. He was put on it after being hospitalized after/during a flare-up. His diagnosis hadn't been confirmed and he had gotten really sick while away visiting relatives. When he got off the train, he was immediately admited to the hospital. ANYway, he is pretty much fine now. The M has kept all symptoms at bay and with just a little discomfort. One week it was a bit worse because he had started a cold and then the M added a headache and nausea. He stayed home from school and was pretty much 100% the next day--having slept a lot. But he has been symptom free since he started it and stopped all the other drugs (he was also on Prednisone which gave him acne and a moonface-very sad) Good luck.

My son is 8 and has been on methotrexate for the past 10 months, he has been doing really well with it. No side effects or any difficulty. When he started taking it he was supposed to take 5 pills, but felt nauseous so we have been giving him 4 pills and no nausea

My daughter is not currently on Methotrexate but was on it from age 4 until almost age 5 for arthritis (a couple years prior to the crohn's dx). It is a similar drug to Imuran but works a little differently. For one thing, it is a weekly administration - either pills or injectable. We found it best to give at night at the time because she did have a little nausea. If we did it just before she went to bed, she slept through most of it. Not nausea every day mind you, just the night of the shot. The monitoring of your son's liver function will be similar to what you have experienced on Imuran.
I hope it works well for him. Some patients respond better to one more than the other.
Blessings,
