VSL#3, probiotics and tummy pain???

Mon, January 03, 2011 9:05 AM

I just started my son on VSL #3 yesterday (1 packet), he seemed to have more tummy pain than the days before (i think)....I am now wondering if it is from the VSL#3 or just that this flare is getting worse.  Has anyone had this experience with VSL#3 or any other probiotics? I did order Florastor Kids for him but it just has'nt arrived yet.

Thanks,
Sandy

My 10 year old daughter was just diagosed last July after what we think was her first flare (we were very fortunate).

Not wanting to go the drug route, we have opted to do a gluten free diet, no liquid milk or ice cream to really limit her lactose, VSL#3 (2 large packets per day), fish oil, vitamin D, and a multivitamin.  So far she has been very healthy - absolutely no signs of a flare up since July which has us thrilled.  I know every patient is different, but we've obviously been happy with the results of what we are doing and I think the VSL#3 has a lot to do with it.

She mixes her VSL#3 with juice or dark chocolate almond milk.  I bought a protein shake mixer at a nutrition store (it has the little metal ball thing in it) which mixes it up with the liquid very well.

Good luck to you.

I would start very slowly. VSL3 made me sick and nauseous (before using scd diet). I haven't tried Florastor but Mutaflor helped me. I don't know if it is available in the US but in Germany they sell lower concentration Mutaflor to start with.

mygirlj,

Thanks for your advice.  I mixed the VSL#3 in with his yogurt and I did do an entire packet.  Maybe I will try half.  Do you give you daughter any other probiotics along with VSL? I odered some Florastor Kids but its a yeast probiotic and I was just reading that a lot of patients with IBD have yeast overgrowth in their gut and now I am not sure if I want to give him the Florastor or not....such a rollercoaster!!!!

Hi Sandy

Don't give up on the VSL... it usually is a combination of many things happening at once. If he is already flaring a bit, most likley the symptoms are from that. I have never noticed that my daughter had a problem with the VSL- it is fairly benign stuff.

You can certainly start off with a 1/2 packet a day for a few days  than increase back up to a pack a day.

How and when are you giving it to him?

Florastor Kids is what our doc had us use for our daughter.  I can't speak to the other ones you asked about though.  Keep trying - you'll find the right mix.

Alan,

Thanks for the reply.  I was kind of thinking that maybe I shouldve started with a 1/2 packet.  I might just wait until I get the Florastor Kids and try that first.  I know that you really promote S. Boulardi, have you ever heard of any side effects with that?
