My almost 9 year son was diagnosed with lymphocytic colitis 5 years ago--he has been taking Pentasa for 2 years and recently increased to a dose of 1500 mg/daily (750 am and 750 pm). I was wondering if anyone as heard of or experienced with their own children a difficulty in focusing/following directions or other similar symptoms to ADD or ADHD?

There is some evidence that ADD/ADHD and colitis may be linked. In particular, there are studies that suggest a connection between ADD/ADHD and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Go to this https://essaydragons.org/ site for more help. The link between ADHD and IBD is likely due to the fact that people with both conditions share many of the same risk factors for colitis (such as smoking, diet and physical inactivity).

Assuming that is the case (I agree), do people with other auto-immune disorders focus on leaky gut? There's an interesting book called, "Never Be Sick Again". I recommend reading it as it provides a simplistic way of looking at what has caused so many health problems in the developed world. It focuses on healthy cells as the key. Modern practices have been a blessing with so many things, but also a curse when it comes to health. Anyway, I find it facinating that all auto-immune diseases can be linked to our gut.

No question there is a gut/brain connection. My 6yr old son has had a 14 month terrible battle with cdiff colitis. He has developed ADD and anxiety along the way.
We have now completed a fecal transplant to try and fix his damaged colon. As Alan said, leaky gut refers to the mucosal breakdown on your intestinal walls. If this is the case, bad bacteria gets into your blood stream and affects the brain and digestive system.
Stabilize first....then try Alan's strategies and look into fecal transplant and worm therapy. Healing the gut is KEY! Good luck, it is a diligent battle you'll need to stay strong for.
