This is a recommended drug for my 11 year old son who has Crohns disease. He has been on Remicade for 3 years now but is continuing to show high inflammatory markers. It is suggested to continue with the Remicade and combine it with a low dose of Methotrexate. Does anyone have any experience and/or feedback with this drug or interaction with Remicade? Thank you.
My son was diagnosed with Crohn's when he was 9 years old. He was on the Remicaid every 8 weeks/one 15mg Methotrexate injection per week regimen for about six months with no problem.
Unfortunately, after he had been on it for a while we started to notice that the day after his shot (sometimes 2 days after) he was getting such severe pain in his bones and joints that the doctor discontinued the methotrexate.
Then, about 6 months after that my son was starting to have flare symptoms again and for some reason his doctor thought we should try methotrexate again - this time it was one 5mg pill per week (a third of what he was getting with the injections). Well, the first to doses went really well, but then after the third dose he was back to the bone pain, so he is off it again.
So, it can work well, but side effects can be awful :-p

hi, my 14 yr old was started on methotrexate inj., then switched to oral when there was a shortage. she just had her 1st remicade infusion last week, and her doc advised staying on a low dose of the methotrexate in order to incr. the effectiveness of the remicade and potentially slow down the often slow decline of the remicade effectiveness. we've been lucky [knock wood and all other protective gestures]....that she's not had signifcant side effects. she did get a flu shot earlier in the fall.
hope things work out for you all-
Nancy

My sister-in-law is on this combo (methotextrate and Remicade) for RA. She just switched so I am not sure how well it is working yet.
My son just ended 10 months of methotextrate as a weekly shot and will be starting Remicade soon. He will not continue on the methotextrate.
Metho goes straight to the bone marrow and works to slow down the immune system. My son didn't have any side effects to methotextrate but he hated the weekly shot. Methotextate enabled him to get off of steroids but studies have shown that although methotextrate is initially effective, it fails to maintain remission at one year 50% of the time. My son is in that half. I have a friend with a 14 year old who Crohn's is very successfully controlled with metho.
Everyone is different. Good luck!

The thought, I guess, is to start with a low dose and see how it goes. We will also recheck to see if antibodies have formed against the Remicade. At that point, depending upon results, we will reevaulate the Remicade. Nothing else, as yet, has been suggested. All your comments and/or opinions/experiences are very much appreciated.
