Grandparents

My 11-year-old grandson has Chrons; he was diagnosed at age 4 (not sure but I think so). He's had a rough time of it, since he also has some very rare underlying condition. None of the medications have worked long enough for him, he's been to the hospital several times for hydration and extreme pain, and the condition seems to be infringing more and more on his ability to have a fairly normal life. I don't live nearby, and I worry about him incessantly, especially each time he gets sick.

He just went through another hospitalization, and my daughter is taking him to see another specialist. I've been wondering just how bad this thing can get. To be perfectly blunt: is Crohns a lethal condition? I signed up here to learn more and hear other people's stories.

Thanks for your response. My daughter is very involved in the local chapter and knows about the forums. She said she does come here occasionally.

I went to your blog and read it--do you have more posts on there besides one on how to treat Crohns? I'm wondering how successful this treatment has been.

You did not scare me -- I appreciate your honesty. I want to know the truth, so thank you for sharing yours. And hearing that you're in remission is wonderful. I'm glad you're doing so well.

My daughter was sick from infancy, hospitalized and misdiagnosed a number of times, and then finally diagnosed at 4 too. I can relate to everything you said (w/the exception of not being a grand parent, but parent).

It did take us a while, but we finally have a new "normal".   Liz will be 12 in Jan. and is active, and smart and genuinely loving girl.  Let your daughter know this community exists and we'd be happy to help.

Crohn's itself is not lethal but the complications can be. Malnutrition is a biggie.  Now that I have scared you, I have lived with my diagnosis for 20 years.  I have raised 3 beautiful children (mostly as a single parent).  I have a successful career.  I am in remission.  I am healthy.  Crohn's does not stop me.
