First of all, please let me say, thank God I have found this site! For the past 8 months I have been searching for info for my son as well as our family to try to help him the best we can. Today, after looking at a Clinic, I saw a phone number to call....and CCFA sent me here! I am the parent of a 14 year old boy who has been instructed to do enemas for 2 weeks due to a flare that is coming on. My question to parents or caregivers...what is my role in this area...should I show him how to do this and give it to him and hope that he does it...or do I send his dad in the bathroom with him? Any advice is welcome!

I am the mom of a 12 yr old girl with CD (she was dx @4).
I would suggest opening up dialog with him. Explain what the enema is, need to use it, length of time, etc., and see what he feels most comfortable with.
I just wanted to mention to you, off topic, have you looked into Camp Oasis? If not, your son is still young enough for you to insist he goes. It is a great opportunity for the kids to get to know others with IBD. The camp has been an integral part in Lizzie meeting others so she could feel welcomed and "normal". Info. is avail. under the "Kids/teens tab".

That is awesome! I am always glad to hear positive stories....Myanne has not had to be on prednisone and I know it is the natural supplements she is on...if you are interested in hearing more let me know. I just want to help kids and anyone with this devastating disease. :o)

Thank you for your response. We had just finished a flare in Feb with prednisone. I do not think they wanted to do that med again so soon? So, we are 14 days of enemas. He did do it himself but growled about it the entire time. I must say, it was not as intimidating as I had thought. He did wake up this morn hungry and feeling great!

She has been treating with mesalamine and natural supplements. You can read her story on the Personal Stories tab...Manzos ...My 15 year old daughter....is hnow it starts out.
