504'd?

Tue, November 13, 2012 3:50 PM

I have read some comments about 504 status for children as respects school and I was wondering what that is.  My 11 year old was diagnosed 11/8 with CD so this is all new to me and I am wading through a sea of information....

My son was diagnosed last Friday with CD, so this is new to me.  However,  as a California sixth grade teacher, I can tell you that when I get a student with a 504 plan (some are academic, some medical, etc.) I definitely read that file first, and it makes me more mindful of the situation.

Additionally, if stress is a trigger, you can provide for alternate testing accommodation if necessary.  In my state, the parent pretty much gets what he/she wants concerning 504's.

I don't know if 504's work at the college level.

504's can be used for people with IBD or probably any other condition under ADA that can make provisions for certain accommodations.  For example unlimited bathroom usage, snacks, water bottle etc.  Some parents find the plan very useful, others elect not to use.   If you type "504 template"  in the top right side search box, CCFA actually has an example for you.
