fistulizing Crohn's

Sat, November 17, 2012 10:02 AM

My daughter, age 20, has had Crohn's since age 14. Her manifestations are abdominal pain (resolved since last year's small bowel resection) and abscesses related to fistulas - mainly rectovaginal.

She has had two repairs of the original fistula. One lasted 1 1/2 years (till she went to college and backed off her meds) and the other was unsuccessful. Her GI just gave her the ok to go to her new surgeon when that night she began rectal bleeding (upon wiping) as well as bleeding (again upon wiping) from a now opened incision from a previous abscess draining. She is heartbroken, going from "let's get this surgery done and hope that is that"  to peddling backwards.

She is at the top of the food chain as far as meds. She is on 6mp, Lialda, Canasa suppositories, and Cimzia (has done Remicade and Humira).

Have any of you witnessed or experienced success in stopping the recurrence of fistulas? Have any of you had long-term surgical successes?
