hello,
I am a 30 year old female with UC. I've been diagnosed since 1994 and have been on lialda/6mp for the last few years. I am wanting to pregnant soon and wanted advice.
My 6mp levels are not working right, and so my GI wanted to switch me to Imuran. When i brought up pregnancy, she says that Imuran is safe and doesn't metabolize in the fetus. When I brought up this and 6mp medication to the obgyn and my physician they both feel that it is class D and unsafe.
I brought up biologics such as Remicade to the GI but she doesn't want me to go on it because my disease is not severe enough to warrant such a medication
I'm really anxious about what to do and want to make a good decision to have a healthy baby. It's frustrating when I get different opinions from different doctors and am not sure who to listen to.
Any advice would be helpful, especially those who have been on this medication and have delivered healthy children.
thank you!

Hi,
I have Chron's and take 6-MP daily. I'm currently pregnant with my first child and have been told by all my providers that it is safe to continue this medication while pregnant. The only medication I was told I could absolutely not take and become pregnant is methotrexate.
I am followed more closely and consider more of a high risk pregnancy but that is more because of the chron's disease than the 6-MP. The biggest things they are monitoring me for are low birth weight (so ultrasounds every 4 weeks), pre-term labor, and bleeding.
I was told there is a slight increase risk and birth defects (cleft lip and palette) but they also said these are the most common birth defects for any women.
I think the biggest thing that all my providers agree on is healthy mom = healthy baby.

I see you posted this a while ago so wondering if you are pregnant. I am 32, with UC, been on remicade for 3 years and have a healthy 2 year old. I am flared now, dr. Wants to add 6mp and he is saying it's safe for pregnancy. I'm scared to death to start taking it. My ob didn't say it's the best but most recent studies indicate it should be OK. I also know someone else who is on imuran and remicade and their gi and ob have her the green light too.

I feel the same way. I was flaring when I got pregnant and now I'm 13 weeks. My GI took me off sulfasalizine and put me on lialda. I'm a little sceptical as I've read you're not supposed ro breastfeed on it. I haven't found anything yet to help this flare. And also in the same boat with conflicting stories from different doctors about medications being safe 😯 not sure what to do at this point.

I know that lialda pulls folic acid from your system so make sure your on gun has you on enough folic acid!
Looking to see if anyone else is dealing with li....
