breastfeeding on 6MP/Colazal

hello, i am 30 years old and i was diagnosed with crohns shortly after thanksgiving 07'...i have been on everything from remicade then humira while always maintaining my daily dose of colazal, 6MP, and enticort. i am happy to announce my my husband and i are expecting our first baby and since becoming pregnant i continue to take 75mg of 6MP and 3 colazal 2x a day. I am SO happy to say that through out my pregnancy ( im 26 weeks) i have been in complete remission and 100% symptom free!!

i am not sure what to do though, i have gotten alot of mixed views on breastfeeding while on colazal and or 6MP. i want so badly to be able to breastfeed our first son, but i dont want to go off my meds and cause a flare in postpartum, or risk the possiblity of harming him if i continue to take them and breastfeed. does anyone or has anyone breast fed while on the meds??

Thank you for posting that. I am currently 5 weeks pregnant and I am on 100 mg 6mp and Colozal. I am super nervous about being on 6mp and dread taking it every morning as I feel like I am poisoning my growing embryo. My GI doctor said that off all the patients he has had that have been pregnant on 6mp - none of them had complications. I am still dubious however and your posting was very reassuring. You are 26 weeks pregnant and on the same meds as me:-) Congrats!!! Post again when you deliver with the good news! I have my first ob apointment in 3 weeks and I will know at that time if my fetus has a heart beat. Excited but nervous....

First off congratulations on getting pregnant! What a joyful occassion to celebrate! I am currently trying to get pregnant and have done A LOT of reading as well. I am on 6mp and sulfasalzine in addition to many others for UC. I know what you are talking about with the mixed reviews. It can be so frustrating and confusing! From what I have read there are some scary things about 6mp, however, 6mp is fine to be on while pregnant if you have too. My OB has had others with UC that have been on it and their babies turned out fine! As for the breastfeeding I am still out on that one. My GI doctor says that it is fine to use while pregnant and breastfeeding, but I am still a little unsure myself. Please let me know if you find out anymore information! A while back I did find some information that I posted, but it is in the archives. You maybe able to still find it there, I can't remember if it talks about breastfeeding, but it does talk about it for being pregnant.

Congratulations again to you and your husband! How awesome!

Hmmm...my doctor has always stressed the importance of being OFF of 6MP while pregnant, b/c it can cause severe birth defects! Has your doctor said it was safe to continue during pregnancy???
