I am 18 weeks pregnant with UC. I am on Asacol and Canasa. I've recently quit taking the Canasa, only to experience more symptoms (no surprise to me)....lots of bleeding/mucous. Anyone have any input regarding my decision? I hate the Canasa, and right now will take the bleeding/mucous over this medication for awhile. I am on an iron supplement due to the rectal blood loss from earlier in my pregnancy.
It seems that my pregnancy has triggered some activation of my disease!
My concern is this: Is the baby going to be fine if I don't go back on the Canasa?

I have Ulcerative Colitis and had to be on both meds while pregnant. I have a now 4 year old but still trying to get back in remission. My son is healthy and happy but I wish I started taking the meds at the beginning so maybe It would not be so hard to bounce back. We are thinking of having another but I got to get better in order to even think of getting pregnant again. I hope that helps.

By the by, mesalamine is suposed to be harmless...it is a type B med cause there are no studies on pregnant women, cause it is not ethical. But I recommend this link:

Hope it helps.

I tottally recomend that you stick to your meds. It is better to stay on meds than to get a flare up during pregnancy.
Unfortunately, 1 third of pregnant UC patients will experience a flare. I did from the 14th week till my baby was 2 months old. If I can be of assistance to you, my e mail is claudia_quintanilla@hotmail.com
Talk to your GI and OBGYN, they know better. And don´t stress it, your baby needs you to be ok.
Looking to see if anyone else is dealing with li....
