Finding an OB-GYN with experience with IBD

Tue, September 14, 2010 7:15 PM

Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed with UC in May, and am experiencing my second flare.  I just moved to the DC area, and am getting married next summer.  While pregnancy/kids wont be on my horizon for a few years, I would like to select and OB-GYN to use now and continue using when I do decide to have children.  Does anyone have advice for finding an OB-GYN with experience guiding women with IBD through pregnancy? I would also love to hear any recommendations in the DC area.

Thanks!

Finding an OB-GYN with experience with IBDLauren,

Im not sure about an OB/GYN but my doctor in Baltimore at Mercy Medical Center specializes in women/fertility with IBS. She often travels to other hospitals, gives lectures to medical schools, etc about women with Crohns and ulcerative colitis. I havent found an OB/GYN that seems to understand all the issues that go along with IBS, but she was more than adequate and worked/advised my OB. Hope this is helpful.

I don't live in the DC area, so I can't comment on specific docs I'm personally familiar with, but I do have a suggestion.  If you already have a GI in your new area (I hope you do, especially if you are flaring), then place a call to your gi's nurse.   You would be surprised of the "inside information" they have.

Good luck.
