Dietary/Complementary/Alternative Medicine Question

Sat, November 02, 2013 7:50 PM

I was diagnosed with Colitis in March, and was having a really bad flare. It has slowed done somewhat. I am currently taking Lialda 1.2 g, two times daily. I asked my GI doctor about adding priobotics and fiber to my diet. He was less certain about the fiber, but confirmed that he has seen great research about probiotics. I started taking 1 probiotic with water as soon as I wake up. I also take 1 scoop of plantago ovata fiber upon right after.

At the same time I was diagnosed with colitis I learned that I have food allergies to wheat, rye, and oats. So I have removed all dairy and gluten from my diet. I did some research and some of the things I read suggested that iron supplements and sulfates/sulfites really can aggravate colitis so I have tried to cut out/cut down on red meat, wine, chocolate, coffee, dried, prepackaged, and preserved foods from my diet.

I also have seen some really interesting research on boswellia serrata, curcumin, and bromelain to induce remission. I just ordered the supplements and am going to give them a shot as well. Has anyone else tried these? Also, I looked up some alternatives to western medicine and was thinking of seeing a doctor of Chinese medicine or Ayurvedic doctor. Some of the Ayurvedic ideas I saw online involve the GI tract a lot and incorporate stress management and some interesting diet tips based on your personality/body type. Has anyone tried either of these?

I really want to get off of the medications and try not to take them every day if possible.

Does anyone know of any other dietary, alternative, natural/herbal remedies that may help ease symptoms or induce remission??

Hi,

I recently got diagnosed with chrons and i consulted a naturopath/pharmacist who also recommended probiotics. he also recomended to me boswelia,  and he really reccomended curcuma (be sure its a controled source, and that its 95% extract - because if its only  curcuma in a pill, you will only absorb 2% of it).

During acute phases ( diarhea) he proposed to try L glutamine ( be sure its controled.. in canada we have NPN codes...)  which makes the body reabsorb the water in the intestines and stop diarhea ( 10grams mixed with water when i cant control diarhea with my diet). And it worked reaallyy well!

I also take a full dose of Omega 3 ( no omega 6!!!),  and supplements of vitamin D( 3000 ui daily) with a complete multivitamin to ensure i have all nutrients ( because  with chrons diet is sometimes tricky to get all the nutrients)

He also told me  that i can eat soaked whole chia seeds, since they are "jellyish", they re soothing for the intestines.

Hope this helped ( sorry about the bad english!)
