Finally Relief by managing Diet

Tue, July 07, 2015 9:37 PM

Hello All,

I was diagnosed almost 10 years ago now with UC, and I really started to take control of my UC about a year ago.  (I know, bout time to get in the game).  I dealt with denial A LOT.  Anyways, I was having flare ups and not able to bring them back down as quickly as I had before with the meds I was using.  I knew that if I told my dr. he would just do 1 of two things: prescribe my med with a bigger dose or prescribe a new med (which I wasn't willing to even think about.)  So after I used the online support group in the month of September last year, I started to try to make contact with a dietician to see if diet could help.  To make a long story short, after 6 months of working with a dietician on diet, I found out I am lactose intolerant (sensitivity to lactose) and a sensitivity to caffeine.

I have been adhering to a new diet and a new way of life for me and my family, and I haven't felt better!  I feel so good and have had zero flare ups!  What an amazing feeling!  If you ever thought that maybe there was something more to this diet thing, you should try to go and see a dietician and maybe get some relief with that.

Lactose was definitely causing my frequent flare ups as well as caffeine causing my major headaches.

Wish you all the best!

Well my new "diet" isn't really a diet as it is avoiding the foods that I know cause the problems.  But the only way I could find out the problems were was to go on a FODMAP diet and test each different food group.  So there is a tolerance build up of lactose.  So I can have hard cheese but not a lot and not every day.  I can have cream cheese but I also wouldn't eat a ton.  I specifically avoid milk and milk laced products as well as caffeine.

No, I haven't cheated on the diet.  I have actually been really cautious.  It is just not worth the pain and suffering later when meds are not going to help it.  And it is more of a tolerance level with lactose.  So I can have hard cheeses just not a lot and I don't have it every day.

do you ever cheat on your new diet?

I know its not worth a full-on flare but sometimes I wonder if I'm going to be sick all the time anyway why not enjoy the foods I like.
