Does anyone else have a problem with eating veggies. I can not eat any veggies raw or cooked. I ate a spoonful of green beans at Thanksgiving and suffered for at least 3 days! The 2 salads I have ate in the last 2 years have sent me into a flare within hours I think. I also can't eat too many fruits, apples, peaches, bananas.....on and on I cant eat them unless I want to suffer.
Just looking to see if anyone else has this problem. I really miss veggies. Any advice?

Maybe is because your body stopped being used to veggies? I was only diagnosed a few months ago but never stopped eating them, I left lactose and meat, i still have some problems like bloating and gas but much less flares and no bleeding anymore. Of course there's also the pills.

Hi,
I can't eat any fresh veggies at all. Before I got ulcerative colitis I ate all kinds of fresh veggies. Now, I can't eat any. Like you, I really miss eating them. I was diagnosed in March of 2011. I have been on MANY medications. I still am in the bathroom 8-10 times a day. Still have bleeding every time I go. My doctor just started me back on Canasa. Last night was the first I used it again. I am hoping that in a week or so, that the bleeding will get better,. I was on Lialda and that made me break out and also my hair was falling out. Now he has me on Apriso along with the Canasa. I was in the hospital 14 days this past summer. At that time I was also sick with c-diff. I really thought I wasn't going to make it. My son came all the way from San Francisco to see me in the hospital. After I got out he stayed for 10 days. thank God for him. When I got home he took such good care of me. Made a list of my medications and what time I needed to take them. My husband was beside himself, so I am so thankful that Randy was here when I first got home. I am 69 years old and have never been sick until now. It has really set me back. I have always been a very active person. I am a care giver for are daughter that has MS. Some say that stress isn't a factor with UC, but I don't believe that at all.

I guess I am one of the luckier ones because I seem to be fine with most veggies. One that does it every time for me is cauliflower. Why? Who knows. As said before trial and error is the way to go.

Hi, I'm New on CCFA, but not new to crohns and colitis... I got diagnosed when I was two... Then had surgery when I was 23.... I am now 25... I am also living with this illness for 23 yrs now... and I still cant figure out what food item sits well with me.... But the reason for this reply was to thank you for sharing some insight, it helped :) Ive actually never in my life had any kind of contact that shares the same illness as I do. It feels very isolating.

There are certian veggies I do better with that others.
Squash, cucumbers and most everything cooked.
Have you tried juicing veggies? Some people do well with juicing.

I just wanted to thank you all for your responses. It is helpful to see what others can do even though I know we are all different. I really crave salads but I am just too afraid to try too much anymore. But I have decided that when I am going to try something out I do it on a Friday night so I have 2 days to try to recover if needed
Well thanks again for the feedback I really appreciate it!!

I have had UC since I was 17, a colectomy at 27, and now I'm 55. I still struggle with vegies. Some people crave ice cream; I crave salads. Sometimes I can eat oranges and grapefruits; other times they block me. I just had a blockage from eating broccoli even though it was well-cooked. Most melons are ok, as long as I chew them well. I do better with iceburg lettuce than I do with romaine (go figure). I can usually eat celery but not carrots. You have to find what works for YOU, and what works one day may not work the next time. I swear it has something to do with the twists and turns in my small intestine. If I can ever be of assistance, please let me know. After 35 years, I've been through it all.

In the beginning weeks after my daughter's diagnosis, it was very difficult choosing fruits/veggies that were tolerable. I had to make sure they were well cooked / chopped/ not seasoned/etc. What worked for her, keep in mind we are all different, was small portions, well cooked, peeled. I used to peel apples, slice them and saute seasoned with a tiny bit of cinnamon. She pretty much could have any veggie so long as it was a little over-steamed with the exception of corn....definite no-no. Another tip I can offer is try the fruit cups packed in fruit juice. I usually pack her one w/her lunch once or twice a week. We also indulge in fresh melons when they are is season, just in moderation. Good luck. It is a slow process, but it does get easier.

I take a multi-vitamin cause I cannot eat veggies. There is alot of info on the internet. There seems to be a consensus of certain foods that can cause flare-ups. Lettuce, any veggie or fruit with seeds, cruceiform (brocoli, cauliflower), corn, apples w/ skin, citrus, popcorn, and nuts. I wish I could give you more advice but I have found with this disease the more you pay attention and study it. The better off you will be.
