I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis last year and am having a really difficult time determining which foods are my "trigger foods." I have been in a flare since January and have been following a low fiber/low residue diet since. I have tried keeping food diaries and cutting foods out all together. I just don't know where I am going wrong. Any advice on how to pinpoint which foods trigger symptoms?

Dark beer is one of my trigger foods. I don't worry too much about what I eat other than try to eat fairly healthy. It is different for everyone which I find very odd. You would think a disease would be more consistent.
There is an interesting book called The China Study, which goes into some detail about how animal proteins are the cause of most of our ailments. There are interesting statistics in the book. For example, they correlate high prostate cancer incidences with high meat and dairy eating countries like New Zealand.
As for diet, there are many theories and many things you can try. A site like http://www.crohnshealingplace.com offers a fairly comprehensive list of options.

I did the SCD for two years. It was a stretch to get accustomed to and I believe it helped about 70%. I ended up going off of it because my sister in law, who is an MD told me about a study that was done with Ulcerative Colitis patients and anti-depressants/anti-anxiety drugs. I did that instead and it worked...until I got cocky and went off of it and started to flare again. Moral of story, stress causes flares.

How did you determine those specific trigger foods for you? I have been staying away from those foods because of what I have learned by researching diet.

I have had UC for 6 years, at times its worse than others. My trigger foods are caffeine, spicy food, fried food, and very acidic food. That being said, I've never felt completely normal since I started with the UC even tho I watch what I eat. I'm tired of all of the pills and so I am going to try the SCD diet after Easter.
