VSL#3 Experiences

I'm a longtime UC'er, 43, been through most all the meds., currently on Humira since January and hoping to end an 8 month severe flare and wanted to know other people's experiences with VSL#3...I recently took the Metagenics Ultra Flora D 1-4capsules(15 billion each since August)-not strong enough and now have the Rx for the VSL#3 DS and working up the amount-up to about 500 billion. I've looked for info. but have only found limited and about taking it with Humira, amounts, etc.(other than their website!)

Thank you very much for the info! I am going to email the link to my doctor and ask for a prescription. What amazes me is that he knows I am taking VSL and that I am very interested in probiotics and he didn't even mention it. Perhaps he doesn't know about.
Yes, I am on methotrexate and my doctor didn't see any problem. I don't recall seeing any problems with other drugs in the research that I have done, but I will check my resources tonight and let you know.

I ran out of room to put this site/info. Probiotic Therapy for Ulcerative Colitis : Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology....a more recent study. Also, I know there are a few of us on here on those "last meds" like the remicade, humira and methotrexate and hopefully they will respond if they have tried it or other info. resources(maybe I should have put it under treatments, too?).

Hi Christina...I think we have exchanged info. before! Yes, to make a long story short I tried to get it last summer and after doing more research found the info. and gave it to my regular Dr./D.O. and he wrote the Rx for the DS VSL3 Helps IBS, Pouchitis, Ulcerative Colitis, VSL #3....the codes are at the bottom-read about the VSL#3 DS...it has 900 billion per sachet...usually people take up to 4 for active UC. Have to translate info. from the original VSL website(regular sachets-450 billion). It's so much more affordable by Rx for the amounts we are supposed to take. You may want to double check with your Dr. about taking it with your meds.(methotrexite-if I recall right?)...I'm still looking for info. with Humira...I've seen a little about immunosuppresive drugs and cautions. Hope this helps. Good luck-I think the higher amounts have helped a little. (And we'll always take a little over nothing or backslide!!)I think it may be a trial and error thing and where you are at with symptoms and variable at times?? Keep me/us posted!

I also take VSL#3 (about 5-8 capsules a day) and find that it has helped. I was not aware that there was a prescription strength. I would appreciate it if you could provide additional information on this as I have run out of options for conventional meds. Thank you.

My son has been taking regular strength VSL#3 for almost a year now with very good results. We started him with the packets of powder and are currently taking four capsules daily. Two in the morning and two before he goes to bed. He has tolerated it well and I believe it has helped.
