Hello, I was diagnosed with Crohn's 7 months ago and was prescribed Azathioprine the help "maintain" my disease. The long term side effects really scared me, so I opted not to take the medicine. Instead, I tried a combination of pre and pro-biotics, other supplements and diet. I recently was in the hospital for a really bad flare up and realized I am missing something in the way I was managing this whole thing. The doctors want me to start taking Azathioprine again. Has anyone used this drug? What side effects have you had? What other diet changes can I make to better manage Crohn's?

I have UC and am taking imuran and will be taking humara. In the book you mentioned can you drink soy and do you eat bread or grains? I have been reading other popular books that state soy is bad to drink and stay away from grains. In this book you mentioned you can. I get soooo confused by all this. HELP! I am still searching for foods to eat that will not leave me nutritionally unbalanced.

I am taking Azathioprine, Asacol, and Canasa. Called Walgreens to see if I can take L-Glutamine powder but they said nothing is listed for that. My nutritionist mentioned it for me and also to take Digestive Enzymes called Solaray Digestaway which is not listed. Does anyone know if you can take these and if not how do I find out if I can?

I have been on Azathioprine for about 9 years.
I made an educated decision that the risks were worth the benefits.
The only significant side affects for me have been suppressed immune system - I have learned to be careful about washing hands, exposure to sick people and I get annual flu shot
and some minor joint pain in hands and feet.
Compared to active, horrible flares, hospitalization, blood transfusions, excrutiating pain, and risk of loss of life- I have chosen to use azathioprine/humira/pantoprazole/tylenol and have a better quality of life.
I also took the time to educate myself about nutrition and eat a diet tailored to my own triggers and responses... I use chiropractic, massage, reflexology to manage stress and feel better.... And I have used accupuncture and counseling with a Chronic Illness/Pain proficient counselor.
Here's a great book written recently by a Doctor with the CCFA:
Stress reduction prior to online exams is facilita....
