Question about SC Diet for colitis

Mon, September 05, 2011 6:32 PM

I've had Colitis for about a year now and have been pretty much okay minus a few bad flare ups. Right now I'm at a point where I'm just having chronic stomach cramps. I only have a small portion of my colon affected but I really don't want it to spread so I'm thinking of starting the SC diet. The problem is I am a vegetarian (but I will eat seafood) and so I eat mainly grains & legumes and I know that's a big no-no on this diet. I guess I'm just looking for some kind of advice as to what to do from here. Since I have such a small part of my colon affected do I really have to be this drastic? Basically I'm really stressing out and worrying. Any tips/suggestions/help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Can I also add -  please do start now while the damage is limited.  I waited until  the damage was extensive because I thought the medicines were working effectively. Again, it was only with hindsight that it became obvious the underlying disease was still progressing.

The day I was diagnosed I was told by the doctor that one of the best things about uc was that I could still eat anything I wanted to!  I don't blame him for looking for something positive to say but I think this was probably the biggest reason I failed to do my own research for so long.

You are lucky you are already thinking on the right lines.

I have uc and scd/paleo/high sat fat is effective but thediet takes longer to work for uc. Read Life Without Bread by Wolfgang Lutz. Some of his uc patients took  8 years to show the full benefit of his diet (low carb) and he said uc was the slowest to respond  of the conditions he could treat with diet. I have used scd for 5 years with a huge improvement but I don't see changes from day to day. Looking back over several months at a time, each year has been very significantly better than the last. There can be setbacks which seem never ending at the time. Interestingly, quite often I think  these are followed by another jump in progress.

The more you read the more you will find out that to stay vegetarian with gut damage is extremely difficuly although, as Alan says, the eggs (usually)and seafood should help along with the right dairy (especially butter). Many animal based foods actually promote healing better than anything else.

I'm actually what's called a Lacto-Ovo-Pesco Vegetarian, meaning I'll eat dairy, eggs and seafood (only shellfish in my case).

I did some more research on SCD & found that it's actually more effective for people with Crohn's as that affects the small intestine and the ability to digest properly, whereas Colitis affects the colon and the ability to digest is supposedly not impaired. But either way I have been trying (somewhat successfully) to avoid grains and dairy and I have actually been feeling better. It just honestly is very hard. Thank goodness I love fruits & veggies! =/
