About SCD

Hey Everyone on SCD, and Allen,

This is what was on the CCFA page for Diet & Nutrition about SCD.

Decreasing poorly digestible carbohydrates may decrease symptoms of gas, bloat, cramps, and diarrhea in patients with IBD, but that is not the same thing as decreasing the inflammation, or affecting the disease process. Unlike the gluten-free diet for celiac sprue, which has a well-researched basis, and well-demonstrated track record for affecting the underlying mechanisms at work in the disease process, the SCD does not.

I guess I was  a little confused because for Celiac they are saying diet makes a big difference but for IBD they are not. Is there a reason why it seems nobody does the research or the trials on IBD. Is it any less important than Celiac disease? Between the diet stuff and LDN and EVERYONE saying I am crazy and why do I have to be the one to buck the system I feel like screaming. Everyone looks at me like why don't I just shut up and follow my doctors rules and take the meds and just deal with it. It gets SOOOO EXAUSTING to keep explaining over and over what is going on. The main thing I get SO MAD about is when the doctors say they will not use off label drugs. It just is unbelievable. They always use drugs for other diseases. They find out it was suppose to be used for one disease and start trying it on several others and IT WORKS. Why is the research not there for IBD? There won't be a cure in my lifetime but by the looks of things there never will be. OKAY I just had to vent. Now I feel  a little better. Oh anybody know of any good doctors in the Raleigh, NC area that aren't so CONVENTIONAL.

Thanks for listening.

My Mom has been pretty much begging me daily to remove gluten and lactose from my diet, as well as chemical additives as much as possible.  She wants me to consider alternative medicine that would help reduce stress or manage pain (such as acupuncture and chiropractors) as well.  I did change my diet quite a bit, for a while, and did not really notice any kind of difference.  I'm terrified of high-fiber foods (especially raw veggies), though, and I think I have been making myself slightly constipated, to add to all my other awful symptoms, because I just shy away from all the veggies I used to love.  I ate almost nothing but white rice with salt and butter and drank monster milk for well over a week last month when my symptoms the week before were so bad, I was throwing up when I woke up just at the thought of going through the pain.  My Mom finally convinced me to throw my box of white rice out but I am just absolutely terrified of food right now, any food, and I am not sure what to do about diet. With both GI, as well as my regular doctor (who has UC herself) insisting diet has nothing to do the disease itself,  and several different diets that other UC sufferers swear by, it is just all really confusing.  I have a few SCD cookbooks, but I just can't really figure out why this diet would be helpful to the gut, especially with so many doctors saying "it's not."

Read the ingredients carefully. Many of the gluten free products are full of artificial additives. Some of the gluten alternatives seem to affect me worse than gluten and I avoid them all. Scd really works and it takes time to adapt but I rarely miss anything now. Bread was the most difficult thing to leave out in the beginning.

I made lots of thick soups that I could heat up quickly in the beginning and they stopped me  giving up scd many times.

It gets easier when you start to realise what food is really healthy and don't try to eat low-fat.

Thank you for the reply. So if I stick to the recipes for bread using almond flour on the SCD site that would be advisable?

My husband is willing to start the SCD program, but absolutely loves bread. I was wondering if it would be acceptable to use gluten free breads and products which our local grocery store has an excellent selection of gluten free products.
