BLOCKAGE NOT SURE

Fri, September 23, 2011 6:35 AM

I need some advice. I have Crohn's and this is sort of gross talking about this. What a disease, we have to talk about bathroom issues.

I need to know what are the symptoms of obstruction or blockage. I dont think I have one yet but I feel so FULL and sometimes even after I drink I feel like I need to burp. My problem has always been fullness in the middle of my chest and pain there. Not sure if there is something I can take. It's not heartburn. I did eat last night but I worry if I am getting blocked. Also I am going to the bathroom but not alot and I seem constipated. What does everyone do? Don't want to take a laxative since I don't want the reverse to happen. What supplements might help that. I have had this all week so I am getting freaked out. Thanks

I was just recently driving myself crazy wondering if I had blockage or not because the symptoms for blockage could also be symptoms of other things.  In my case, luckily, it appears I was only constipated (because I was scared of eating fiber) and not actually blocked.

I would definitely suggest a talk with your doctors, if these symptoms are persisting.  Gallstones can also cause some of the symptoms you are describing.  I know my ex-husband was consistently, and incorrectly, diagnosed with heartburn and stress, when he actually had giant gallstones.  But, there are a lot of other things that could cause those same symptoms, too. I think, since it's causing you concern, it's good to just go in and discuss what's going on with the professionals.

The times that I found out I had blockages my symptoms were pain, loss of appetite, and vomiting after taking in anything (even water).  My rule of thumb for going to the doctor over it was always whether or not I could keep water down, and whether or not I could control my pain with diet, rest and meds. One GI group didn't seem to respond to me when I told them that I had those symptoms, but when they didn't stop, I went to the ER instead where they did a CT and I found out that I had a blockage. Sometimes when you have a blockage you can feel a hard bulge in your abdomen with your hand... but don't push around on yourself too hard.

MJP, there are a couple of possibilities as to why you feel full.  Inflammation can cause this feeling.  Your digestive system may not be moving as much as it should.  You could have a partial blockage.  There are other reasons but these are three I know a lot about.  I can pretty much tell now what is going on with my freaky digestive system.  For inflammation, I rest my gut.  I drink pineapple/coconut juice, teas, broth, etc.  I eat jello (homemade not Jello).  I do this for several days and it seems to calm things down.  When my bowels "go to sleep" I walk, massage my belly, and eat very lightly or go on liquids.  I add aloe (Georges Always Active) to my juice, I avoid bananas, and I eat blueberries.  The blockage is different.  There is usually vomitting and intense pain.  If it is caused by food, it will pass in less than 24 hours (usually about 6).  If it is scar tissue- well, the doctors are called.

Please remember, I am not a medical professional, I am just a Crohnnie.
